In my opinion, the MD/CEO role is the best executive role within any SME. It is the role ultimately held accountable for delivering sustainable value. It is a role that can provide great satisfaction but can also prove to be very stressful, demanding and at times lonely.

Having been invited to 'jump-in' I soon found myself in deep water and had to teach myself how to swim .... very quickly!! I then enjoyed 90+% of the journey before almost burning myself out in the drive for success. This journey taught me a great deal; about myself, about 'people', what I got right and what I got wrong, what to do and what not to do, as well as how to think clearly and make better decisions under pressure. It also provided me with the great incentive to set up my business practice and do what I now do ..... in the way that I do it.

I am passionate about what I do and how I do it and whilst I always learn with every new client experience, I never compromise my values or ethics .... that is something else I learned along the way.

Some of the experiences I have encountered during my time as CEO are as follows:

  • Leading the company through a bank 'intensive care' process due to very tight cashflow conditions
  • Leading and directing business restructuring (downsizing) and performance turnaround
  • Leading the refinancing process with new investors and a Management Buy-In (MBI)
  • Leading and implementing cultural change to a market driven and aligned business
  • Leading and Managing rapid growth under tight cashflow conditions
  • Managing risk associated with change, rapid growth and cashflow constraints
  • Development of outsourced support for non-core and specialist activities; (some of which was off-shore)
  • Implementation of corporate performance management utilising key performance indicators (KPI's)
  • Leading and directing business process re-engineering compliant with ISO-9001 2000 standards and organisational restructuring via a process driven business model
  • Leading the presentations and negotiations for stock exchange listing (IPO) via reverse takeover of listed cash shell
  • Development of best practice corporate governance principles within business processes and stakeholder performance management
  • Leading and directing 'Vision to Value' strategic development programmes
  • Coaching and mentoring for key staff development and succession planning
