Too often SME's evolve and fly by 'instinct' and loose sight of their objectives or are stalled by unforeseen change. A properly implemented performance management process facilitates sustainable growth BUT must always be implemented within the context of the enterprise and with practical common-sense in mind. It is all too easy to get distracted into detail and go over-board on KPI idnetification and analysis .... and 'blind' yourself with analysis & statistics.
